Steamboat Williecoin
With Steamboat Willie aka Mickey Mouse being released into the public domain on
January 1st 2024 and Bitcoin having it’s 15th birthday in the same month.
As an artist it became an irresistible opportunity to bring these two icons together in
one piece of art.
I chose to include the birthdate of Willie, and the date on record for bitcoin’s
first blockchain transaction, January 12th 2009.
This is when programmer Hal Finney downloaded the bitcoin software and received
10 bitcoins from Satoshi Nakamoto in the world's very first transaction on bloc 170.
I have created Willie clutching onto bitcoin in place of the ships wheel that we are all
so familiar with in that very early drawing. I’ve added date stamps, and can imagine
Willie declaring in his high pitched mouse voice the phrase,
“I’m going to love you forever”.
I have created 12 variations of the artwork with different colourways,
one for each month of this year 2024, a year that brings these two hugely influential
icons of our time together in these celebratory NFT artworks.
